Make that 2

Today was I’d last day of cross country and he did not run with his team.  He has been complaining that his shin hurt for the last few weeks but he said that it would be fine after a day or 2 of rest.  Well today I took him into the orthopedic place that I went to for my ankle and yup K has a stress fracture in the left Fibula.

K and I both now sport walking boots.  I have mine on my right leg and his is on the left but we are both stuck in a boot.  He is only on day 1 with the boot and already hates it lol.  I only have a week more to be stuck in mine.

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

FEED YOUR HAIR

What we eat can have an effect on all areas of our bodies, and that includes the appearance of our hair.  So if your locks are looking lackluster, consider adding the following to your diet:

  • Pumpkin seeds add shine to your hair.  They’re also a good source of iron, which supplies oxygen to the hair roots, makes hair grow faster and prevents hair loss.  Pumpkin seeds also contain protein, which is crucial to the production of keratin, the ha it’s protective coating, and zinc, which strengthens hair follicles.
  • Walnuts can help if your hair color is fading.  They contain copper, which is needed by the body to produce melanin pigments.  Melanin gives hair its color, and it also helps to thicken and add shine to the hair.  Eating walnuts may also help to reverse the graying of hair.

Perfect

Today I went into work early so I could get things accomplished and it was chilly when I left.  After work it was a perfect 69°F and I wanted to go for a run so bad.  O had conferences for 2 kids today so running was put even if I didn’t have the broken ankle.

Conferences went awesome for both kids.  I am so proud of all my children.

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

BE GIVING

All of us have items that we’ve kept in our lives for their sentimental value, items that were given to us at some point and were once of use or things that have simply managed to avoid all the usual clear-outs and have lain gathering dust for years.  Donating to your local second-hand stores provides an excellent excuse to clear out your wardr3while contributing to a good cause.  Whether it’s that top you once loved, or that book that you obsessed over during your teens, it’s nice to think that someone else can get the same joy again from that item.  Not only are you helping yourself to move forward and organize your life, but others along the way can gain something from your actions, too.

Exhausted

I am now 2/3 of the way through my 12 day work week and holy cow am I exhausted.  I haven’t worked more than a 5 day work week in a long time and I am feeling it.  I am not sure if it’s that I am getting older or the broken leg that I am walking around on.  I am still holding out hope that I can be back to running on my follow up in just over a week and until then…

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

SEEK RESPONSIBILITY AT WORK

Rather than salary or status, the most important factors behind job satisfaction are how much control employees have over the type of work they do and how meaningful their jobs are.  Even though stress tends to increase as people ride through the ranks, so too does autonomy-and it is this, or the lack of it, that affects well-being and satisfaction at work.

So whenever possible, seek out more responsibility at work-not only could it improve your chances of career progression by showing initiative, the increased autonomy will also lead to greater job satisfaction.

Cold

It was a super chilly day at work today I am so glad that I remembered my jacket this morning.  I work at one of those jobs where you spend most of your day outside.  Some days it is super cold/hot and then its brutal but most days aren’t so bad.

I work with some awesome people so it is totally worth it.

I had a happy/healthy post all written out but then word press stopped working and I lost it and I just don’t have time to re type it right now so you just gotta go without it.

Tired

Starting work at 5 am on your day off sucks.  Tomorrow we start at 7 but still no weekend.  My ankle is bothering me today like I figured it would from not having a rest day during the weekend like I normally have been doing.  Hopefully I can get through the next 6 days of work without too many problems.

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

CREATE A DAILY RITUAL

Daily rituals can provide a sense of comfort, ease, and purpose.  A ritual doesn’t have to be something amazing or unique, just something that you can try to do every day that will reset your mind and gear you up for the day’s challenges.  It may be a connection to the physical, intellectual, or spiritual part of your life, but the important thing is that it acknowledges what you consider to be important.  No two daily rituals are the same so do whatever works for you.

Friday the 13th

I got cursed today did you?  With 2 hours of my work shift I was voluntold that I am working this weekend.  So I get to be up at 4 tomorrow to be at work at 5.  I am not looking forward to working 12 days straight but the paycheck will be nice.  The down side is I won’t get the weekend to actually wear the boot and rest my ankle so hopefully it won’t bother me too much this week.  So right now it is movies with my boot on.

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

TRAIN THE BRAIN: MIND TEASERS

Expand your mental capacity and consider new ways of thinking with these logic puzzles and mind-bending problems.

  1. Two boys are born to the same mother, on the same day, at the same time, in the same year and yet they’re not twins.  How can this be?
  2. On what seems to be a normal evening, Ted and Alice are sitting together in their front room.  Ted is watching DVDs, while Alice is reading a book.  Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the power goes out.  Ted curses, and then decides to go to bed.  But Alice declines to follow him.  With no use of artificial light, and in the pitch-dark, she keeps on readong.  How?

Answers: 1. The two dots are two of a set of triplets, 2. Alice is blind and reading a Braille book.

How did you do?  I never got the first one and the second one I figured she was reading an e book.

Tired

This fixing broken bones sure takes a lot out of you.  For the last few weeks I have just felt exhausted.  All I want to do is just roll over and sleep the day away.  I can’t wait to spend the weekend relaxing and catching up on some much needed sleep.

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

GO FOR THE GOJI

Goji berries are full of vitamins, particularly vitamin A and vitamin C, are a good source of calcium and fiber and contain more iron than steak.  Gobi berries are also full of compounds called petrochemicals-natural chemicals, including flavonoids, tannins, and carotenoids-which have important health benefits.  Dried Gobi berries can be eaten raw or cooked.  With a taste similar to raisins, and slightly crunchy in texture, they are good sprinkled on breakfast cereals or added to fruit salads.

2 weeks

Two weeks from today I have my follow-up appointment about my ankle.  I have been in this boot for 3 weeks now and I am very anxious to get out of it.  I have learned my lesson about over training I promise.

I made it to K’s cross country meet after work today.  It is the first time ever that I have watched him race.  Usually I am in the same race and he is way ahead of me.  Watching someone else run when you can’t is very tough.

K is the maroon one in front.  He has a funny form but then again so do I lol.  He finished towards the end of the middle of the pack.

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

COMMUNICATE AT WORK

Communication is an art form.  It can be a powerful tool for getting through life and has a great impact on our personal and professional relationships.  Expressing yourself or rallying a message with sensitivity, honesty, respect, and professionalism is a fantastic way to build positive relationships.  But different people and situations require different approaches.

You will probably meet people with vastly different characters, from vastly different backgrounds during your career.  Sensitivity and respect are the key words here to keeping it professional.  Pay attention to the type of person you are meeting and engage accordingly.  Stay calm even if adverse exchanges occur.  If possible, be prepared: know your conversation topic, your company policies, and the background of the person you are meeting.  Don’t divulge too much personal information upon first meeting-keep things brief and clear.

Why?

Some days I wonder why I am even keeping this blog going.  I mean I call myself Psycho Runner Girl yet I haven’t even ran for 3 weeks.  I am so tired of this boot it is not even funny.  I figure I will reconsider getting rid of the blog after I recover until then you still get to put up with me.

Today feels like boot day 400 but it has only been 3 weeks.  Tomorrow I am going to punish myself by going to watch K at his cross country meet.  It is hardest for me to see others out running when I can’t.

Today’s happy/healthy tip is:

TRY ACUPUNCTURE

Nowdays, acupuncture is increasingly recommended as a complementary therapy by professionals trained in Western medicine.

The principle of acupuncture is that when needles are inserted into specific points on the body it stimulates the flow of “Qi” or energy.  When this energy is stagnant or overactive, it is thought to cause fatigue, discomfort, and disease.

Worldwide, there is still a debate about the therapeutic effects of this ancient practice.  However in 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a review and analysis of controlled clinical trials that listed 28 conditions for which “acupuncture has been proved-through controlled trials-to be an effective treatment”

Many people swear by acupuncture to relieve the following conditions:

  • Stress
  • Sports injuries, such as tennis elbow
  • Chronic pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and osteoarthritis
  • Digestive complaints, such as nausea and vomiting
  • Women’s health issues, such as menstrual cramps, infertility, and menopause

If you suffer from any of the above, consider asking your doctor about acupuncture.

View

Today at work I got to climb to the highest point on the property to do an inspection.  While I was up there I got a nice pic of the leaves changing colors.  It is starting to get cold in the mornings and is still awesome running weather in the afternoons.  I want to be out enjoying it so bad.

I am so ready to be done with the boot and be out running.  I know that I need to let it heal so I stay home and RICE it.
